The Chosen
February 5 - March 12, 2005
Leo K. Theater
Questions of faith and its place in our lives permeate The Chosen, the play adapted by Aaron Posner and Chaim Potok from Potok’s classic novel. While faith is also divisive in this tale of growing up in different religious traditions in Brooklyn during the 1940s, the bond between friends or between fathers and sons can bridge even that chasm. This story of two fathers and their teen-age sons unfolds amid a bustling Jewish neighborhood in 1944 Brooklyn. One Hasidic and one Orthodox, the boys serve as catalysts and guides for one another’s transition to manhood. Set against the backdrop of World War II, the revelation of the Holocaust, and the desperate struggle of Zionism, The Chosen is ultimately not fundamentally political or religious, but deeply human.
