Noises Off
December 11 - January 15, 2004
Bagley Wright Theater
This farce-within-a-farce about actors acting as actors acting characters is a theatrical joyride, hailed by New York Times critic Frank Rich when Noises first opened as “one of the most sustained slapstick ballets I’ve ever seen.” The phrase “noises off” is theatre jargon for a commotion offstage. But in Noises Off, the commotion is onstage, created by a troupe of has-been and never-were actors touring in a dreadful British sex farce called Nothing On. Michael Frayn gives us a backstage, and onstage, peek at a disastrous show in which every actor’s nightmare unfolds with uproarious results. The New York Times called Noises Off “the most dexterously realized comedy ever about putting on a comedy.”
