2023/24 season offerings in: Lighting Design, Stage Management (1 position), and Production Management.

TERMS

  • Duration: Seattle Rep’s 2023/24 Season runs August 2023 - June 2024. Apprenticeship contract start/end dates will vary by department.  
    • Lighting Design, Production Management : Full-time (40 hours per week) for up to 36 weeks, with some sabbatical time. Weekly hours will vary based on the needs of each production but a minimum of 32 hours per week can be expected. In addition, a limited amount of overtime will be available during tech weeks. 
    • Stage Management (1 Positions): Full-time (40 hours per week) during the following dates -  September 26 - December 17, 2023; December 26, 2023 - February 11, 2024; and February 27 - May 12, 2024, with some sabbatical time. Weekly hours will vary based on the needs of each production and some overtime may be available during some rehearsal and tech weeks.    
  • Compensation: All Apprenticeships pay $18.69/hour 
  • Apprentices should expect to work on-site. Some work from home may be offered. Find Seattle Rep's evolving COVID safety protocols here
  • Personal days depending on length of engagement.  
  • Some limited availability for housing, for applicants not in the Puget Sound Area. 
  • In addition to hands-on training in their chosen field, Apprentices have the opportunity to participate in:
    • Cohort activities to build relationships within the Apprentice class.
    • Seminars with industry professionals to gain an overview of how departments collaborate at the regional theater level. These seminars also introduce Apprentices to the Seattle theater scene and help them gain an understanding of how different-sized organizations work.

Lighting Design

OVERVIEW
As part of our commitment to developing emerging theater artists, we offer a specialized Lighting Design Apprenticeship for applicants who have academic or equivalent early career experience in lighting design and are looking to expand their knowledge to the workings of a large regional theater. This Apprenticeship focuses on two main areas: developing the practical skills of an Assistant Lighting Designer – VW Drafting and paperwork, communicating with vendors, working with a union stage crew, pre-production and planning, etc. – and developing the Apprentice's design skill set through a series of theoretical design projects including research methods, drawing, storyboarding, model building, etc. The Lighting Design Apprentice will split their time between the rigors of tech and the fast-paced environment of an active production office, honing skills and developing work practices that will guide them throughout their career in Lighting Design. The supervisors for this apprenticeship are Lighting Director Robert J. Aguilar and Lighting Associate Lily McLeod. PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES Throughout the course of the season, the Apprentice will:

  • Serve as the primary Assistant Lighting Designer on at least one production
  • Be exposed to and build relationships with some of the top designers in the country
  • Culminate the program in one portfolio-worthy lighting design project, including a final light plot and lighting section, research images, and storyboards
  • There may be some additional design-related experiences available depending on the season and the Apprentice’s availability

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Prior knowledge of how to read and generate a lighting plot and basic lighting paperwork
  • An understanding of standard stage lighting equipment
  • Aptitude for creative problem solving
  • Self-motivated
  • Able to maintain patience and composure under pressure
  • Work Sample

ACCEPTABLE WORK SAMPLES:

  • One hand or computer-drafted lighting plot with associated paperwork
  • Either four photographs of your design work or a link to a digital portfolio or website that includes photographs of your design work

Stage Management

OVERVIEW
The Stage Management Apprentices (2 positions available) will serve as a member of the stage management team on two or three productions throughout the season. The scope of the apprenticeship will include assisting the Stage Manager/Assistant Stage Manager in all aspects of the show process, from prep work and rehearsals, to technical rehearsals onstage, to the running of performances. When appropriate, there will be opportunities to learn and call a performance as well as assist with new play workshops and readings. The supervisor for this apprenticeship opportunity is Stina Lotti, Production Stage Manager.

PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
Upon completion of the Seattle Rep Stage Management Apprenticeship, individuals will:

  • Be well-versed in how to run a professional rehearsal room and onstage performances
  • Have a deep understanding of the specialized responsibilities of stage manager, assistant stage manager, and production assistants.
  • Have a working knowledge of various union rules including AEA (Actors' Equity Association) and IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees)
  • Have further developed skills to organize and communicate large amounts of information efficiently
  • Have begun to practice managing and working with many different types of directors, stage managers, actors, designers, crew, and theater staff members

REQUIREMENTS

  • Previous stage management experience
  • Experience in other aspects of production is a plus
  • A proven ability to multi-task
  • Ability to remain calm in pressure situations 
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of personalities and needs, with a lens towards equity.

Meet the 2022/23 Apprentices: Max Zamorano & Rosemary Jones

Production Management

OVERVIEW

In assisting the Artistic Producer, Director of Production, Associate Director of Production, and Company Manager, this apprenticeship provides hands-on experience in contracting artists, maintaining schedules, making artists feel welcome in our theater, and producing new works along with the work that goes on our stage. The Apprentice will experience the inner workings of all areas of production and will learn the ins and outs of the various theatrical union contracts. The supervisor for this Apprenticeships is Aaron Alonso, Assistant Director of Production.

PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

At the end of this Apprenticeship, participants will:

  • Have developed enhanced management skills across a variety of theatrical disciplines
  • Participated in production meetings, technical rehearsals, and previews with professional directors and designers from across the country
  • Utilize skills learned over the course of the season by being the primary producer for Youth Engagement performance programs
  • Have built a network of theatrical professionals in Seattle and nationally
  • Have interacted with a wide variety of theatrical unions 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Candidates must have experience working in Microsoft Word and Excel 
  • Strong affinity (or quick study) for organizational technology, such as MS Teams, Sharepoint, Zoom, etc.
