4 Reasons Why Seattle Rep’s Production Intensive is the Ultimate Teen Theater Experience
S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders is more than just a novel—it’s a cultural phenomenon. The story has been adapted into a classic 1980s film and transformed into a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, and now a play adaptation is about to hit Seattle Rep’s Leo K. stage in a BIG way.
This fall, Seattle Rep’s Young Rep program is launching its first-ever Production Intensive, where students ages 13–20 will rehearse and perform The Outsiders in a fully produced, all-teen show. Over ten weeks, participants will train with professional Seattle theater artists, developing acting techniques and ensemble collaboration, and experiencing the thrill of performing on a professional stage.
Here are four reasons why Seattle Rep's youth Production Intensive is one you and your teen don’t want to miss.
1. Be a Part of History: Seattle Rep’s First All-Youth Production on the Leo K. Stage
Seattle Rep is handing the Leo K. stage entirely to youth performers for two weekends this November! This inaugural fully produced (imagine lights, costumes, and a full audience!) youth production will feature a talented cast of teens bringing Christopher Sergel’s adaptation of Hinton’s groundbreaking novel to life with heart, intensity, and unflinching honesty.
ABOUT THE OUTSIDERS:
“Stay gold, Ponyboy"
In a world where loyalty is everything and the divide between rich and poor runs deep, Ponyboy Curtis and his tight-knit group of "Greasers" struggle to find their place. When a violent encounter with the rival "Socs" shakes their lives to the core, Ponyboy and his friend Johnny are forced into hiding, setting off a chain of events that will change them forever. The Outsiders is a raw and gripping coming-of-age story about friendship, survival, and the fight to be seen.
2. Engage With Real-World Themes Through an Award-Winning Classic
A powerful work of American literature, The Outsiders faces book bans in parts of the country because of its frank exploration of themes of poverty, identity, violence, class, and societal division. Though the original story is now 58 years old, the issues addressed remain deeply relevant to today's audiences.
By embodying and analyzing characters who wrestle with these struggles, young adults can deepen their understanding of the world around them and recognize why stories like The Outsiders remain essential for every generation.

3. Theater Offers Lifelong Benefits and a Lasting Love of the Arts
Theater gives students a safe, constructive space to build skills that last a lifetime: creativity, confidence, empathy, and collaboration—while also nurturing a lasting passion for the arts.
“Studies show youth in arts programs have fewer disciplinary issues and better academic outcomes, and adults who engage in lifelong arts learning are more likely to pursue higher education and thrive professionally,” says Education & Community Programs Director Deanna Martinez.
“Theater and live entertainment are part of a huge creative industry that thrives when we nurture the next generation of theater lovers. Young Rep is designed to give young artists the skills, mentorship, and experiences they need to grow as individuals while fostering a lifelong appreciation for the arts,” says Martinez.

4. Creates Lasting Connections Through Theater
Theater reflects the real struggles of the world back to us—but it also builds connections. Teens can find community and build friendships through shared vulnerability—in acting classes and on stage.
In The Outsiders Production Intensive students will spend three evenings per week rehearsing together, learning to trust one another, and forming bonds that often last far beyond the final curtain.
