Welcome to Seattle Rep’s Public Works! We are thrilled that you’re interested in participating in our upcoming musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s As You Like It- a fantastical tale of faithful friends, feuding families, and nefarious suitors. Our fair heroine Rosalind is fleeing persecution from her uncle’s court to unearth a new life (and hopefully love!) in the Forest of Arden. Amidst the beautiful trees, Rosalind and her family find community and acceptance under the enchantment of the stars. All the world’s a stage for our Public Works family and you are invited to run away with us into the wild.

FAQs

What is Public Works?
Seattle Rep’s Public Works is Theatre Of, By and For the people rooted in the values of Equity, Imagination, and Joy! We invite folks from all over the region to participate in a theatre making process at Seattle Rep. You can learn more about the program, our partners, and our first production here.

What is As You Like It?
Our production is a musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s comedy. Together we will bring to life this fantastical tale of faithful friends, feuding families, and nefarious suitors. Our fair heroine Rosalind is fleeing persecution from her uncle’s court to unearth a new life in the Forest of Arden. Amidst the beautiful trees, Rosalind and her family find community and acceptance under the enchantment of the stars.

Do I have to have professional experience?
Not at all! You don’t have to have ANY experience.

Where can I audition?
We’ve got auditions scheduled all over town.

What do I need to prepare to audition?
Tell a joke, tell a story. Share a monologue or a song. Do a scene with a friend. Read a paragraph from your favorite magazine! Most importantly, show us who you are and what you like to do.

How do I audition?
Each audition will include a group of folks including other auditioners, members of the show’s creative team like Timothy and Kathryn, and the Public Works Seattle team, Lia and Angie. We’ll warm up together and play some theatre games, then we’ll all support you as you show us what you’ve prepared.

Can I audition with a friend?
Yes! You can bring a friend, bring a family member, bring a neighbor. This is a multigenerational production!

What if I get nervous?
No worries. We’re all in this together and we want you to succeed. If you stumble, take a deep breath and try again.

What if I don’t want - a speaking role/ to dance/ to sing?
Let us know!

What if I don’t want to be on stage?
Great! There are plenty of ways to be part of this unique community behind the scenes. Talk to the Public Works team about what you would rather do.

What happens after the audition?
We’ll give you a call within the first few days following your audition and let you know if we’d like you to return to the final audition at Seattle Rep. If you make it through that final round, you’ll be in the show!

What’s the time commitment?
We have a lot of fun but the time commitment to put on a play of this scale is big. We’ll have more detailed information at the audition, and we can talk about a few conflicts, but it’s important that all cast members be available for technical rehearsals and performances from September 3-8, 2019.

What advice would you give on how to do a successful audition?
Have fun! Help us get to know you. Show us what you’re good at, what you love, and what makes you happy. Remember, we want you to succeed.
