Speak Up! with Joi Gresham
Gresham will share her process of invigorating and preserving the work of Lorraine Hansberry, her family’s connection with the writer, and the impact of Hansberry and her canon today in this preshow presentation.

Joi Gresham

Joi Gresham is Literary Trustee of the Estate of Lorraine Hansberry. She oversees the multi-media licensing of Hansberry's works and other intellectual properties and serves as editor for print editions of Hansberry's writings. Gresham was Associate Producer of the 2014 TONY Award-winning Broadway revival of A RAISIN IN THE SUN starring Denzel Washington. In 2014, she created the LORRAINE HANSBERRY RESTORATION PROJECT that includes the script restoration of two major works by Hansberry. In this capacity she was a Consulting Producer with The Oregon Shakespeare Festival production of THE SIGN IN SIDNEY BRUSTEIN’S WINDOW. In 2016, she served as Script Consultant to the Goodman Theatre production of the same play and the National Theatre production of LES BLANCS in London. She is the daughter of the late Jewell Handy Gresham-Nemiroff and the late Robert Nemiroff, Hansberry's literary executor. Her career spans forty years as a dancer, choreographer and arts educator. Gresham has taught as guest artist and on college and university faculties in the US.

Pamela L. Banks is a tireless advocate for equity and social justice, building community partnerships and strengthening community engagement to create lasting economic opportunity. In June of 2012, Pamela became the second woman in the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle’s 87-year history to hold the position of President and CEO. Pamela continues the Urban League’s historic program focus on reducing economic and social disparities in education, employment, housing and health focused on African Americans and low income communities in Seattle and throughout the Puget Sound Region. Prior to joining the Urban League, Pamela served the residents of Seattle over the course of a 30 year career where she built a reputation for making city government more accessible to underserved residents, community organizations and small businesses. She launched her career as a community organizer and became the director of community outreach and senior policy advisor to Mayor Greg Nickels. She also was a public relations manager in the Department of Housing and Human Services and held leadership positions in the Department of Neighborhoods and Transportation. In her personal capacity, Pamela serves on multiple boards and currently is on the executive committee and board for the Alliance for Education, the Downtown Seattle Association, the Washington Technology Industry Association, and is a lifetime member of the University of Washington Alumni Association and President of her condominium association. A 40 year resident of Seattle, Pamela received her B.A. from the University of Washington. She has one son and is a long-time resident of Seattle’s vibrant and diverse Central District

Michelle Chen is the Senior Project Manager for the City of Seattle’s Housing Affordability Livability Agenda (HALA), which hopes to create 50,000 housing units over the next ten years to address the growing affordability crisis in Seattle. As project manager, Michelle manages and oversees the implementation of the city’s interdepartmental HALA workplan through developing policies and working with Council to pass legislation, while also coordinating the public engagement and community outreach efforts. Prior to HALA, she was the Finance and Strategic Partnerships Manager in the City of Seattle’s Office of the Waterfront. She helped develop the funding strategy and negotiated partnership agreements with crucial Waterfront redevelopment projects such as Pike Place Market and Seattle Aquarium. Michelle has spent the last 15 years in government work, specializing in land-use and community development policies. She has a Bachelors degree from Bryn Mawr College and a law degree and a Masters in Public Administration from the University of Washington.

Norman B. Rice serves on the Board of Trustees of Casey Family Programs, a foundation focused on safely reducing the need for foster care for children and families across America. He previously served as president and CEO of The Seattle Foundation, which he led in its mission to create a healthy community through engaged philanthropy. Rice is former president and CEO of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Seattle, where he worked with financial institutions to make their communities better places to work and live. Rice served as mayor of Seattle from 1990 to 1997 and earned national acclaim for revitalizing Seattle's downtown, strengthening the city neighborhoods through public-private partnerships, championing an improved public school system, and implementing a model welfare-to-work program. Rice was a member of the White House Council for Community Solutions, and has served on the board of the National Alliance to End Homelessness and the Brookings Institution's Advisory Committee for Sustainable Communities. Rice holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications and a Master of Arts degree in public administration from the University of Washington.

University of Washington’s School of Drama graduate directing, acting, and doctoral students will present an evening of dialogue and excerpts from The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window, Les Blancs, The Drinking Gourd, among other works by Hansberry.
