Aurélia’s Oratorio
A dazzling display of stage illusion
Starring Aurélia Thierrée, featuring Jaime Martinez
Created and Directed by Victoria Thierrée Chaplin
May 7-11, 2008
In the delightfully twisted tradition of Shockheaded Peter, Tim Burton and Edward Gorey, Seattle International Children's Festival, in partnership with Seattle Repertory Theatre, presents Aurélia’s Oratorio, a dazzling display of stage illusion, physical theater, and circus acrobatics. Aurélia's Oratorio was conceived and directed by Victoria Thierrée Chaplin especially for her daughter Aurélia Thierrée. This critically acclaimed international hit plays at the Seattle Repertory Theatre May 7 through May 11. Aurélia’s Oratorio is recommended for ages 10 and up.
The universe of Aurélia’s Oratorio is a celebration of the suspension of disbelief. Finding inspiration in European circuses and medieval drawings, Ms. Thierrée has populated her Oratorio with Salvador Dali-esque clocks, dancing dresses, disappearing time, and people that seem to exist in altered states.
Aurélia Thierrée, the creator (along with Victoria Thierrée Chaplin) of this bewitching performance, has been called an “elegant waif with impossibly flexible limbs and a great line in sleight of hand.” (The Guardian) She comes by it honestly. Ms. Thierrée has performed since early childhood with her parents Jean-Baptiste Thierrée and Victoria Thierrée Chaplin, the pioneers of new circus in the famous Cirque Invisible (Seattle Rep 1997) and Cirque Imaginaire.
