by Cheryl L. West
Directed by Chuck Smith
November 15 – December 16, 2007
Running time: 80 minutes, no intermission
One Minute With...Chuck Smith, director of Birdie Blue
Birdie Blue is preparing her once sweet talking
husband, Jackson, for a journey, while she also bakes
a cake for her son’s birthday. But the peace of
this domestic scene belies Birdie’s state of mind,
and she welcomes us in to tell it like it is – and
like it was. Birdie’s life parallels the history
of contemporary African-American life, from the fields
of Mississippi to the gritty streets of Chicago, and the
stories of her life reveal the hardships and joys of the
struggles shared in late 20th century America. This lyrical
and yet frank reflection on love, marriage and the passage
of time is by Seattle playwright Cheryl L. West (Jar
the Floor, Holiday Heart, Before It Hits Home, and
Addy: An American Girl Story).
Read the extended Prologue article, "Live Like Somebody Loves You" by Christine Sumption.
