Did you know only about 16% of mainstage productions nationally are authored by women? The Women Playwrights Festival was founded in 1998 to nurture and support the work of women playwrights. Between 2002 and 2007, Seattle Repertory Theatre partnered with Hedgebrook (a Whidbey Island retreat for women writers) for the festival: four playwrights—selected from a highly competitive pool—presented public readings at the Rep and then adjourned to a week-long residency at Hedgebrook to do further work on their new plays.
Alumnae of the Women Playwrights Festival include Lynn Nottage (Intimate Apparel, Crumbs From the Table of Joy), Theresa Rebeck (Bad Dates, Omnium Gatherum), and Sarah Ruhl (The Clean House, Eurydice), and many more.
