Internships: Meet The 2009-10 Interns
Christy Denny – Literary Intern
Christy Denny graduated from George Mason University in 2008. She has since freelanced in directing and dramaturgy in New York and the “other” Washington–as in, DC. Recently, she produced and directed
MAY 39th/40th
at the 2009 Capital Fringe Festival, assistant directed David Adjmi’s
Stunning
at LCT-3 Lincoln Center, and dramaturged
The Marriage of Figaro
for Constellation Theatre Company. She also attended the 2009 Lincoln Center Director’s Lab. But Christy took this year’s theme of “change” very seriously, and is therefore quite excited to explore life on the West Coast–in a city where her last name won’t be linked to an unhealthy fast food place.
Tess Malone – Lighting Intern
Tess Malone decided theatre was the place for her after seeing
Annie
at the ripe age of five. She then pursued dance for 15 years before becoming a Kidstage kid at Village Theatre in Issaquah. Tess recently graduated from Linfield College in McMinnville, OR after double majoring in theatre and business with a focus in acting and lighting design. She is thrilled to take her first step down the path of a professional lighting designer and is especially excited to be doing so in Seattle. After living in Tennessee, Florida, and Seattle, Tess has decided the Seattle theatre scene is a great place to start as an artist.
Mike Bowers – Stage Management Intern
Hi, I'm Mike Bowers. I was born in New York State, but mostly raised in Florida. I recently graduated from Florida State University with a dual degree in Theatre and Psychology and have worked the last two summers at Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival (a much cooler climate for my summers!) Moving to Seattle is also a good way to avoid that hot and humid Florida weather, so I'm very exciting to be here and to be working here at the Rep! In addition to stage management, I have unhealthy obsession with comic books, mystery and fantasy novels, and anything Joss Whedon related. Oh, and since moving here, I can't stop drinking coffee...
Norah Elges – Casting Intern
Norah Elges is a theatre artist originally from Washington, DC and holds a BFA in Theatre Arts from Boston University. While at BU she focused in acting, directing, and dramaturgy. Prior BU credits include: Oh! the
Humanity
(Kate), Under Milkwood (assist. director),
China
(Karen),
Tape
(director),
The Baccahe
(chorus),
Lizzie Stranton
(assist. dramaturg), and
Machinal
(ensemble). For her senior thesis she directed two new plays by fellow students,
BREAK
(by Rebecca Newman) and
People of Paper
(by Julie Civiello). Over the last five years she has worked as an intern in various positions at Imagination Stage (Bethesda, MD), New Repertory Theatre (Watertown, MA), Public Eye Communications (London, UK), and American Repertory Theatre (Cambridge, MA). She is very happy to be in Seattle for it’s abundance of coffee, theatre, rain, wine, apples, water, book stores, and outdoor markets.
Krystin Matsumoto – Production Management Intern
Krystin Matsumoto comes to the Seattle Rep having graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Conservation and Resource Studies and a minor in Music. Although from her degree she appears not to have dabbled in many theatrical exploits, she has been involved in the performing arts since elementary school. In college, she fell in love with her extra-curricular activities becoming heavily involved in UC Choral Ensembles as well as becoming the Production Manager and then Managing Director of BareStage Productions. After completing an Arts Administration internship in her hometown with the Los Angeles Children's Chorus and the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, she moved out of her home state of California and is ready to explore a brand new city and meet some awesome people.
Sarah Roquemore - Education Intern
When Sarah Roquemore interviewed for an internship at Seattle Rep. last April, she had never ventured further west than Texas. Now, six months, three thousand miles, and 13 states later, she is fast adjusting to her new life on the other coast. Born in Florida and raised in Richmond, Virginia, Sarah is a southern gal through and through (don’t forget it, y’all). After majoring in theatre and English at James Madison University, she spent a year as the literary/public programs apprentice at The Studio Theatre in Washington, DC, where one of her favorite duties was planning and implementing their student matinee and school outreach programs. Now that she’s at The Rep, Sarah is stoked to be teaching and directing high school students on a more regular basis. When she’s not hanging out with teenagers (or theatre educators who act like teenagers), Sarah is usually cooking, eating, or thinking about food. She also loves college football (and the trash talk it ensues), 80’s dance parties, and the great outdoors, which she plans to explore on every clear day she gets!
Rachael Dorman – Stage Management Intern
Rachael Dorman has been acting like a mother since the age of 5 when she used to tuck her own mom into bed. In college she found stage management to be a perfect outlet for her motherly persona, her constant need to be organized and her love of control. Rachael just graduated from Southern Virginia University where she majored in Theatre with a technical emphasis. As a Seattle native she is thrilled for the opportunity to come home and be a part this fantastic theatre company that she used to watch as a child.
Alyssa Simmons – Arts Management Intern
Alyssa Simmons is from Los Angeles, CA by way of New Haven, CT. She spent the past four years working on a BA in Theater Studies and International Studies at Yale University. As the Arts Management intern, she enjoys learning about the intersection where art meets business. She is an upbeat, perky individual who loves sharing a cup of coffee over enlightening conversations with new friends. Although a SoCal girl at heart, she likes nothing more than getting caught in Seattle's rain. She is grateful for the opportunity to further her education about the business of theatre with the Seattle Rep.
Ian Chant – Communications Intern
Ian Chant has lived in the Pacific Northwest for long enough that he has essentially gone native. He graduated from Western Washington University in 2007 with a BA in Creative Writing, and has nothing to say in defense of this decision, other than that it seemed like a good idea at the time. Since then he has worked as an arts reporter, film critic, copy editor and marketing consultant, penning everything from theatre reviews to elementary school science workbooks, all while drinking entirely too much coffee. He’s excited to be a part of the team at Seattle Rep, where he gets to simultaneously indulge his creative and pragmatic poles. When he’s not writing press releases and copy for the Rep, he can generally be found writing something else, be it a blog post, film review, script, or a journal of his ongoing quest to develop psychic powers. Yes, really.
